FREE Disaster Training

Disaster Training provided by the South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross is FREE to the public. The prerequisite for all Disaster Training is the Introduction to Disaster Services course that can be taken online here. Descriptions of the courses can be found below the class schedule.


Disaster Education courses are provided free of charge to those willing to respond in times of disaster.

*Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance:  Client Casework is intended for Red Cross employees and volunteers who are interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to conduct client interviews and provide emergency disaster assistance to clients. Others who may benefit from taking this training include those in Operations Management and anyone requiring an understanding of the operational procedures and tasks associated with conducting client casework.

Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery:  The Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery course is designed to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to establish collaborative relationships that contribute to coordinated disaster response and help to ensure inclusive and effective service delivery. This course will also prepare participants to begin conducting liaison activities in a chapter and establish a foundation upon which they can build toward a career as a liaison in the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) System.

*Disaster Services: An Overview:  This basic level course provides an introduction to Disaster Services at the American Red Cross.  The couse is divided into two modules.  The first module introduces disaster preparedness and response at the American Red Cross and the second module is designed for Chapters to customize with their local Disaster Services program information.  The course engages participants through integrated video and interactive activities.

ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll:This course consists of two sessions.  In the first session, participants use the participant workbook, video and the Safe Handling Procedures on Disaster Relief Operations handbook to learn about the safe use and operation of an ERV.  At the conclusion of the first session, participants complete a self-administered true or false question course review.  In the second session, participants receive an ERV orientation and take a road test conducted at a Red Cross Chapter.

*Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment:This is a blended learning course consisting of two components – online (approximately 3 hours) and classroom (3 hours). Both pieces are required. The purpose of this course is to introduce the critical role of disaster assessment, explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information, and become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery decisions. This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.   Supervision on Disaster Assignment: The purpose of this training is designed for participants who have supervisory experience outside of the disaster relief operation.  The course incorporates pratical and operational supervisor applications.  It does not teach supervisory skills; the focus is on the Red Cross application of established supervisory skills in a disaster relief operation setting.  The purpose of this course is to help participants make the transition from their traditional job to that of a Red Cross disaster relief operation supervisor so that they can successfully manage their assigned staff and work unit.  Prerequisites:  Supervisory life experience and Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action.

Fundamentals of Disaster Public Affairs: The Local Response: The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to work with the Public Affairs activity on a local disaster relief operation. (Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action is a prerequisite.)

Logistics: An Overview: The purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the processes of Material Support Services activities in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed by Material Support Services workers and how they can become involved in their local chapter. (Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action is a prerequisite.)

Logistics Simulation: The purpose of this training is to provide participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful logistical operation in their local chapter. (Logistics: An Overview is a prerequisite.)

Serving People with Disabilities Following a Disaster:This is a blended learning course consisting of two components – online (approximately 45 minutes) and classroom (3 hours). Both pieces are required. The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to outline Red Cross policies and practices related to providing services to people with disabilities following a disaster. (Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action is a prerequisite.) *Shelter Operations: The purpose of this course is to prepare staff and volunteers to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster. (Mass Care: An Overview is a pre-requisite to this course, and Shelter Operations is a prerequisite to Shelter Simulations.) This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.

*Shelter Simulation: The purpose of this training is to provide participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run successful shelter operations. (Prerequisite to this course is Mass Care: An Overview and Shelter Operations.) This is a basic disaster course and is required to be considered a fully trained disaster volunteer.
